Reflections on “In the Fray”
The MACR Papers, Masters in Critical Craft Studies, Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa, NC, 2023
Reflections on “In the Fray” was written for The MACR Papers, Class of 2023, the final publication of the Masters in Critical Craft Studies at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. I was invited to contribute to Jill DiMassimo and Joanna Weiss's student publication, 'Shifts in Conversation,' focusing on scholarship about Black craftwork and Black craftspeople in America by students and alumni of the MACR program.
In Reflections on “In the Fray,” I discuss my practicum research, which examined craft through the lens of skilled craftswomen. I centered my analysis on Black women who lived in the Upper South between 1850 and 1910, specifically looking at the transition from enslaved craftswomen to free women entering institutionalized education.
